What exactly is big thinking? Well, that’s a simple question that requires a complex answer. You see, thinking big encompasses a lot of territory. It requires a level of self-worth and strength. It involves attitude and belief. Courage and the ability to see the world differently. Above all, it requires a real desire to effectuate change in your life. It requires that you get rid of misconceptions and that you break damaging and ingrained old habits. In short, thinking big requires work. A willingness to step into the unknown, have the strength in character to persist and act inspire of fear. It is not a shortcut or a hack. Instead, it is a slow and steady movement in a positive direction. Big thinkers tend to use inclusive language. Thinking about how best to achieve their goal. Because of this, thinking big is not for everyone.
The opposite of thinking big, obviously, is thinking small. One of the best ways to understand big thought is to take a look at small thinking. Small thinking is everything big thinking is not. People who are in the habit of thinking small fail to see the bigger picture. They value more immediate, and more short-term, gratifications. They tend to be unable to defer smaller, easily obtainable, rewards in favour of larger, more difficult rewards. Because of these habits, small thinkers will often settle for less. They actually do believe that less is more, mainly because they can’t imagine themselves obtaining more than they already have.
This doesn’t mean that small thinkers don’t have dreams, they do. They just don’t see how any of their dreams could ever become real because they are stuck in “realistic” thinking. This results in some interesting actions. A small thinker may dream about and talk about goal X. However, because they don’t think big enough, they actually take steps towards result Y. X and Y are the exact opposite of each other. Yet, the small thinker doesn’t see the contradiction in wanting one thing and then actively moving to achieve that thing’s opposite. That strange result is objectively obvious, but subjectively, to the small thinker, it’s simply business as usual.
So, how do you stop thinking small and start thinking big? By changing the way you think and act. Your thoughts influence your actions. Your actions influence your thoughts. This means that big thoughts have an incredible amount of power to influence your actions. If you’re a small thinker, this means no more contradictory behaviour. You can start aligning your actions with your thoughts and your thoughts with your actions and start seeing some solid positive gains in your life.
